Welcome to the first issue of The East Tennessee LEADER, the newsletter of the East Tennessee Regional Leadership Alumni Association (ETRLAA).
With each issue, a personal history and highlight of an alumni will be featured.
The first person to be featured will be Bob Gonia:
Update: Bob Gonia was an outstanding example of effective leadership: a spiritual and community leader and advocate for the aging. He received degrees from Birmingham Southern College, Emory University and the University of Alabama. He was awarded President Bush's Points of Light, A Special Recognition Award from AARP/NRTA, the Sevierville Rotary Club "Dr. Broady Humanitarian Award", and the Paths of Honor Award from the Senior Center in Huntsville Alabama. At the time of his death on september 27, 2002, he was serving as Dean of Regional Leadership, Dean of Leadership for Sevier County and was Chairman of the Sevier County Board for the services to the Aging. The following article, written before his death is retained here as he wrote it to encourage readers to emulate his leadership.
Bob had a varied history, a keen insight into leadership practices, deep convictions and a pleasing perspective on life. He provided the following information:
About Bob Gonia I have been asked to write about myself in this beginning issue but how can I cram 68
years of life into a short space? Let me try by an outline form. I was born and raised in Alabama as a “project” kid in one of Eleanor Roosevelt’s planned
communities called Palmerdale. I went to military school in Sweetwater, however, and
fell in love with East Tennessee. I returned here to take a position with TVA in 1979
and hope to die of old age right where I am. Career-wise, I began as a Methodist minister, working as a schoolteacher and coach on the
way to a graduate degree. I became involved in programs for the aging directing an
area agency on aging. I shifted to community development while working at TVA where I
retired in 1994. I became a consultant in community and organizational development. I am now the dean of Leadership Sevier and a consultant to the Gatlinburg Gateway
Foundation as well as the director of our regional leadership organization. Some accomplishments in Sports: Football in high school, college and army. All conference
in H.S.; Scholarship to Vanderbilt; 2nd Army Champions in service. Golden Glove in
boxing; Track in H.S. and College. Career accomplishments: Missionary in Sumatra, Indonesia, 1960-63. Developed and directed
an inner city and night ministry, an Inter-faith Service organization, and an
ecumenical house church in Huntsville, Al. Developed a model area agency on aging; Organized and served as first President of
National Association of AAAs and the Southeastern Association on Aging. One of my
programs received the President’s Points of Light Award from President Bush. My wife, Victoria Nicholson, and I operate Persephone’s Farm Retreat Bed and Breakfast in
Sevier County. We have together, six children and nine grandchildren so far! I love
to play with my miniature horses and farm animals and entertain guests. One of my
favorite activities is to teach Church School and discuss philosophies of life with
others.When asked to explain how he got involved in East Tennessee Regional Leadership
Association, Bob responded: "I got involved with ETRL by conducting some training for
the leadership groups being established by the ARC grant administered by the
Community Design Center. I then facilitated a workshop for these leadership groups
discussing the formation of a regional effort. They asked if I would direct the
effort so here I am. I hope that this group will become recognized as "The" regional
leadership organization to participate in and that it will move to the identification
and suggestions for addressing regional problems and issues. This was one of the
original goals to be accomplished through regional workshops on selected issues but
was left out due to financial limitations. I am excited over the Alumni Association
because the network established in the program needs to be both expanded and
strengthened for the regional consciousness to grow into a viable force for community
improvement. I think we have that chance with the beginning that some of you have
made. I do think that the result of the program should be a strong network of
community leaders committed to effectively addressing regional issues."
The alumni association, ETRLAA, being formed is intended to assist the graduates of East Tennessee Regional Leadership (ETRL)by providing a communication medium and will include a directory of East Tennessee Regional Leadership (ETRL) graduates as well as a roster of the 2001 class. Upcoming issues will feature the board members of ETRL Association. It is our hope that this newsletter will become a primary communication link for ETRLAA members. Upcoming issues of the LEADER will promote networking, feature highlights of people in our association, identify annual events across the region, support the Nine Counties One Vision efforts and encourage leadership activites in all counties within the East Tennessee region.
The East Tennessee LEADER will be published in three mediums: at this web site, on e-mail to those having e-mail addresses and through normal mail channels to those not having e-mail addresses. We hope the LEADER will become a welcome and helpful communication medium.
